Can Your Console Switch Tell You When Equipment is Misbehaving?

Most console switch products can provide network administrators with vital tools to allow management and troubleshooting capabilities for network devices at remote installation sites, but wouldn’t it be handy if your console switch could also automatically notify you when a network device ceases to function? WTI console switch products include a heartbeat feature, which when used in conjunction with our “Lost Communication” alarm, can immediately notify you when compatible devices, hang, fail, crash, or just stop working.

The heartbeat feature and Lost Communication Alarm are designed to assure you that all compatible network equipment, connected to your console switch, is functioning properly and is available for use. When properly configured and enabled, the heartbeat feature and Lost Communication Alarm will constantly check compatible devices, monitoring device response in order to ensure that all devices connected to your console switch are up and running.

The heartbeat feature functions similarly to a ping failure alarm; once enabled, a signal is sent out to each connected, user-specified device, and the console switch then monitors for a proper response. However, the heartbeat feature and Lost Communication Alarm differ from a ping failure alarm, in that heartbeat checks are performed via each individual console port, rather than being performed via the Ethernet port.

If a connected device fails to respond to the heartbeat signal, the console switch can then automatically notify you via email, SNMP Trap or Syslog message, allowing prompt response to problems that can often be corrected with a simple power reboot. This allows you to ensure that network devices are always ready when you need them, and allows quicker diagnosis of problems when a critical device ceases to function. The heartbeat feature and Lost Communication alarm also speed and simplify the task of tracking down the exact source of problems by letting you know exactly which serial port is connected to the problem device.

When a console switch with this capability is combined with a remote power reboot unit, this allows you to easily restart a troublesome device in order to immediately determine if the problem can be remedied by a simple power reboot, roving a complete, remote management solution for looking after all of your network equipment. Since many modern, network-based companies have such a great deal of network equipment installed at a variety of far-flung sites, this allows you to easily keep track of all of your equipment, no mater where it might be located.
