Switched PDUs – An Intelligent Way to Remotely Meter and Control Power

These days, most large companies are becoming increasingly aware of the ecological and economic impact of power consumption. Large power consumers (e.g., companies that use a lot of network equipment) have realized that excess power consumption is not only ecologically undesirable, but it also results in larger energy bills. They also realize that a Switched PDU can provide a powerful tool for both measuring and controlling energy consumption by their network applications.

A switched PDU provides network administrators with a powerful tool for monitoring power usage by individual devices or equipment racks, and also allows them to minimize energy usage by disabling power hungry devices when they’re not in use. In some cases, a switched PDU can cut energy costs to the point where some large companies have actually managed to qualify as being officially “green”; an important achievement that often impresses in today’s environmentally conscious consumer.

A well designed PDU can do much more than just report energy usage. WTI Switched PDU products can also send alarms to notify users when certain environmental or operating conditions are detected. This allows network administrators to react quickly when rack temperatures rise too high, when the power supply is interrupted or when devices are consuming too much current. In addition to notifying personnel when these conditions are detected, WTI Switched PDUs can also automatically shut off non-vital network devices and switch on cooling systems to alleviate problems.

In addition to power metering and management functions, WTI Switched PDUs can also be used to remotely reboot devices that have ceased to respond to commands, eliminating the need for service techs to travel to remote network sites just to flip a switch on an off when a network device crashes.

The presence of a switched PDU in your equipment rack allows your network administrator to both monitor power consumption for energy conservation, and also gives them the ability to easily reboot or disable attached devices without being physically present at the equipment site. Remote reboot and power control capabilities allow your network personnel to control and manage power from anywhere; even when their on the road dealing with other issues. The intelligent power control capabilities of WTI Switched PDUs also allow you to schedule power switching and reboot operations to be initiated automatically, without operator intervention; a very handy feature for those who need to disable certain devices at times when they’re not being used.
