Windows 8 Release Date: October 2012

Given the longevity of Windows XP … I wonder if Windows 7 will still be alive and kicking in 2020?

Microsoft is keeping a strict no-information policy on the next Windows operating system Windows 8. There are barely any official statements on the next Windows, except for Mr. Ballmer’s statement that it will be Microsoft’s riskiest product.

The majority of information come from leaks, and unintended revelations. Job openings have for instance become a valuable source.

Microsoft Netherlands published a news story on their website on Friday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the release of Windows 7. Nothing surprising there one would think, except for the fact that the last paragraph of the article gave an outlook at the future, revealing the Windows 8 release date.

The interesting part of the article concerning Windows 8′s release date is the following:

Verder werkt Microsoft uiteraard aan de volgende versie van Windows. Maar het zal nog zo’n twee jaar duren voordat ‘Windows 8’ op de markt komt.

It basically means that Microsoft is working on the next version of Windows, and that it will take two more years (twee jaar) before Windows 8 will be officially released to the public.

A three-year phase between Windows 7 and Windows 8 is what most experts have estimated, and this news posting is confirming it.

If Windows 8 gets released in October 2012, it is likely that

  • A Windows 8 Beta will be released around January 2012
  • The Windows 8 RC will be released around April 2012
  • The Windows 8 RTM will be released around July 2012

Those figures have been taken directly from the Windows 7 development phase. This assumes that the development will progress without larger interruptions or problems.

Two years is plenty of time to sell lots of copies of Windows 7. Have you switched to Windows 7 yet? What features should Windows 8 have to convince you to upgrade to Windows 8?
