A Console Server with Outbound SSH and Telnet

Troubleshooting problems at remote network equipment sites can sometimes be frustrating, especially when the source of the problem is a malfunctioning firewall. When the firewall is down, that often means that you can’t contact any of the network devices behind the firewall in order to remedy the problem, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to travel to the remote site and fix the problem in person.

If your network equipment rack includes a WTI Console Server (http://www.wti.com/c-4-console-server.aspx), it’s easy to deal with problems at remote network sites using the Outbound Telnet or Outbound SSH functions … even when other outside network communications channels are not available. With a WTI Console Server solution, you can easily create a secure dial-up connection to the Console Server, and then employ the Outbound Telnet or Outbound SSH function to create a connection with any device on the remote network.

The Outbound Telnet and Outbound SSH functions allow you to invoke commands on remote network devices to review devices status, correct problems, or change configuration parameters … all without leaving your office. And if you’re as busy as most network administrators, this saves you from traveling to remote sites when you’ve already got more than enough to keep you busy back at the main office.

Both the Outbound Telnet and Outbound SSH functions are extremely configurable, and can easily be disabled or enabled for each user account via the convenient User Directory, allowing administrators to reserve outbound access to qualified personnel or deny specific users from accessing those functions.

WTI console servers are availble with either RJ45 or DB9 serial ports to allow easy adaptation to the needs of almost any network application. Our TSM series RJ45 port models are available with 8, 24 or 40 serial ports, and our RSM series DB9 port models are available with 8, 16 or 32 port models. Both the TSM and RSM are available in both 120V AC, 240V AC and -48V DC powered configurations.

Western Telematic, Inc. (WTI) designs and manufactures remote device management products for IT applications.
