These freeware anti-virus programs always make me a little nervous …

Avira DE-Cleaner is a new specialized security software from the makers of the popular antivirus software AntiVir. The program has been designed as an on-demand virus scanner that can be installed or used as a portable version. The tool has been created in cooperation with the Anti-Botnet Advisory Center, an initiative run by the Association of the German Internet Industry (eco) which is backed up by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

Let’s just call this one “interesting” and leave it at that …

Sometimes you may not be sure if a local file is safe to execute even with an up to date antivirus software installed. It can then be reassuring to scan the file with online malware scanners, preferably a service that utilizes multiple antivirus engines, to determine if a file is malicious in nature or not.

This sounds incredibly helpful … or at least it provides one last thing to try before reformatting your hard drive.

Many antivirus companies are offering free rescue disks to provide their customers with an option to disinfect a system from the “outside”. That’s especially helpful in scenarios where a virus has damaged the operating system critically, so that it won’t boot anymore on its own.
