It will be interesting to see how well this works out; from what I’ve seen so far, machine translation usually leaves a whole lot to be desired.

Microsoft revealed in May 2014 that it is working on real-time translation for Skype. While machine translation is not a new concept, real-time translation of voice communication in this magnitude is. Translation services such as Google Translate or Bing Translator have been part of the Internet for many years. They can be used to translate text or web pages from one language into the other.

Machine translation almost always results in a garbled, difficult to understand mess. It’s been around since the 1980s, and although different companies have managed to adapt it more applications, they still haven’t been able to improve the quality of the translation very much.

Automatic translations can help when people need to communicate with each other without speaking the other’s language properly. Clownfish is a third party software that integrates with the popular communication software Skype. The software works automatically once installed and connected to Skype (a prompt to allow access to Skype is displayed in Skype once Skype and Clownfish are running).
