The answer to this one is pretty darned simple … if you think about it a minute, the solution is obvious.

News of so-called retail chain hacks fill the Internet every week nowadays it seems. If you are an Internet user, you have probably grown accustomed to reading news about online hacks that resulted in user data getting into the wrong hands. Hacks targeting retail stores and chains on the other hand did not make the news that frequently before, but all of that changed when news broke that the hack of Target has resulted in the theft of up to 110 million customer data sets including credit card numbers.

How to Protect Your Credit Card with RFID Chip from Unauthorized Scans

Fortunately, they aren’t recommending that we start carrying lead lined wallets in order to prevent unauthorized RFID scans … yet.

According to latest estimates, more than 1 billion credit cards and IDs have been released with an RFID chip in the recent past. You may have heard about the new payment form that many larger retailers in the US support. Just wave with your credit card at the counter in close proximity to a payment station and your credit card information are automatically transmitted to the payment processor. That is in theory a great system as it simplifies and speeds up payments when you make purchases.

On one hand, this sounds like a real pain in the neck, but on the other hand, I usually ignore anything that even looks like it might be an ad anyway …

If you thought it could not get worse with all the tracking and personalization on the Internet, then you have just been proven wrong. According to The Wall Street Journal and other sources, both Visa and MasterCard are planning to tie credit card purchases with personalized online advertisement. What does it mean? You recently bought a new BMW? Expect to see car insurance ads! You are a regular customer at Mc Donalds, Burger King or Kentucky Fried Chicken? Expect weight loss ads to dominate your ad experience on the Internet. Paid your membership to that online dating site with your credit card? See mail order bride ads.
