Yes, Defragmenting is Still a Useful Thing

Defragmentation still has it’s place, especially when dealing with slow loading files and programs, but given the size of most hard drives these days, defragmenting a drive can often take a heck of a long time.

You may have read Samer’s Ten software trends that are (or should be dying) recently here on Ghacks which listed disk defragmentation as one of the trends that is dying. It is undeniable that the rise of Solid State Drives and better defragmentation support of operating systems have made the need to defragment disks or files less of an issue on many computer systems.

20+ Programs that You Should Run Regularly on Your PC

Although the author makes a good point and very many useful programs are discussed here, it almost makes PC maintenance sound like a full time job …

Many PC users do not think about maintenance as long as their system is running as intended. The issue here is that they might be able to resolve future issues, or mitigate them at least, if they would run a set of tools regularly on their PC. The following guide looks at some of the recommended programs – my recommendations – that should be run regularly on a PC. Not all are maintenance related though, you also find security and privacy programs in the list for instance.
