This is a neat trick. I’d been wondering how to move my favorite programs to the top of the start menu, but hadn’t taken the time to figure it out yet.

The following guide explains how you can stick your favorite programs and applications to the top of the program listing in the Windows 10 start menu. Microsoft’s Anniversary Update, released on August 2, 2016 shipped with a number of changes. A start menu redesign was one of the changes. Microsoft moved the shutdown button to the bottom position for instance, and decided to display all installed application shortcuts directly on the first page of the start menu.

Several elements in the Windows operating system have been restricted by Microsoft. It is for instance not possible to pin folders to the Windows 7 taskbar, or to add programs to the Favorites group in Windows Explorer. There are however workarounds available that allow a user to do just that. This leaves the question unanswered why Microsoft decided to restrict the functionality in first place.
