IBM’s Super-Computer “Destroys all Humans” at Jeopardy

In order to be a fair fight, Watson should have had OCR capabilities so it would have to visually read each question, just like the humans did.

In case you missed this story, IBM have been wanting to test the new Natural Language AI engine in their Watson supercomputer, so they arranged for it to appear on US game show Jeopardy.  This particular show was chosen because the nature of the questions means that it’s not a simple case of word recognition, the computer really has to think about the problem its been faced with.

Big Blue Supercomputer to Appear on TV’s Jeopardy

This sounds like a pretty silly idea. It would be a lot more interesting if the IBM computer was going up against an HP supercomputer or a Cray …

It is the silly season so it was only right to announce that supercomputing giant IBM are so confident in the processing abilities of their new Watson machine that they are pitting it against two human contestants on popular TV show Jeopardy in a three night special that starts on February 14th according to the BBC.

IBM Fingers Web Apps As Culprit Behind 36 Percent Rise In Enterprise Security Threats

I wonder if this means that we’ll return to the former habit of routinely disabling Javascript for security purposes?

IBM put out a new report (embedded below) on security threats to enterprise computer networks today from its X-Force security research group. It found a 36 percent increase in security vulnerabilities, with Web applications being the main culprit. Web apps with security exploits accounted for 55 percent of all disclosed vulnerabilities.

IBM embraces Firefox, adopts it internally

This further underlines the end of IE’s domination of the browser market …




A recent change to IBM’s internal IT policy has made Firefox the company’s default Web browser. The move is a major endorsement of the browser’s suitability in large-scale enterprise environments. IBM plans to roll it out to employees on new computers and will encourage its staff of 400,000 to use it on their existing systems.

Bob Sutor, IBM’s vice president of Linux and open source software, discussed the company’s motives for adopting Firefox in a blog entry published this morning. He says that its transparent development model, strong security, and robust support for Web standards and extensibility have made it the “gold standard” for open source Web browsers.
