Microsoft Releases Hotfix for Internet Explorer 8 Security Vulnerability

The most surprising thing about this article is the news that the US Department of Labor and Department of Energy are still using IE8!

A security bug in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 web browser was confirmed by the company on Friday in a security advisory. Reports of attacks began to appear two days earlier when security firm Invincea reported that attacks were carried out against the US Department of Labor and Department of Energy exploiting a new vulnerability in the Internet browser. Another security company, FireEye confirmed the reports.

Can You Remove Internet Explorer 8 from Windows 7?

IE8 gave me a whole lot of troubles when I was installing Windows 7; specifically, it was taking me forever to download Windows updates via IE8. Updating to IE9 solved the problem immediately.

The topic came up recently on our How To Uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 9 guide: Is it possible to remove or uninstall Internet Explorer 8 from Windows 7? The short answer is no, it is not. At least not if you mean to completely remove the web browser from the operating system. Internet Explorer 8 ships with Windows 7 and is an integral part of the operating system. Well, that in itself is not entirely true as well as Windows 7 E editions that are sold in the European Union ship without Internet Explorer 8 enabled. The browser is still there though.

Vista to Windows 7 Upgrade Downgrades IE9 to IE8

If you’ve recently upgraded Vista to Windows 7, you might want to check to see if the version of IE that you’re running is still up to date.

Windows Vista users who have been testing the beta of Microsoft’s latest web browser Internet Explorer 9 may be in for a surprise if they upgrade their Vista installation to Windows 7. What happens is that these users will notice that Internet Explorer 9 is no longer installed on their computer system. Instead, Internet Explorer 8 is once again on the system. In short, the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 will downgrade Internet Explorer 9 to Internet Explorer 8 if present on the system.

Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows Internet Explorer 8

This looks like a handy tool for small network administrators …

System administrators can use Group Policy rules of Windows to control the working environment of user and computer accounts. The Group Policy is often associated solely with enterprise, school, business and other organizations, when in fact it can be useful in smaller computer networks and even home environments.

Many rules in the Group Policy center around restricting features of the operating system, or programs running on it. There are for instance more than 1000 rules available to regulate Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
