These lesser-known anti-virus programs make me nervous … sometimes free anti-virus programs end up being more of a threat than the viruses that they claim to keep out.

It sometimes pays of to occasionally scan a computer system with another virus scanner. We all know that no security software in the world can protect against every known threat. Even if the software catches 99,9% of all malicious files it still means that every 1,000th file slips through.

Stuxnet Removal Tool

This comes about a month too late for many of Stuxnet’s victims, but it looks like somebody finally came up with a Stuxnet removal tool …

The public became aware of the Stuxnet worm back in July, largely because it was linked to several 0-day vulnerabilities of the Windows operating system. Researchers who analyzed the worm discovered what appeared to be its core purpose: To target industrial computer networks running Siemens WinCC software. But the nature of the vulnerability made all Windows systems vulnerable, and while workarounds were published shortly after the discovery it was not enough to limit or even eliminate the spreading of the worm.

How to Update Last Year’s Security Software to this Year’s

Here’s a neat trick that appears to work on a variety of different security programs …

Most security software companies, like Kaspersky, Symantec or Bitdefender, release new products ever year. The updated programs often come with additional security modules, better detection, engines, resource usage and other features that make them more powerful than last year’s version.

Security Software Downloader

As a general rule, I’m usually leery of free security software unless I’ve already read up on it. This program offers a convenient gateway to many different free security packages … but it might be a good idea to know a little bit more about each program before downloading …

One of the first tasks after the installation of an operating system is the installation of security software to protect the computer from viruses and other forms of attack.

Windows users can select programs from a huge available selection. They can install all-in-one solutions, often called security suites that combine antivirus, firewall and other security programs.

Most security suites are commercial applications. Users who do not want to pay money for security software, can install free alternatives. This usually means that the user needs to install multiple programs to protect the PC from all kinds of threats.
