Windows 8’s Fast Startup Does Not Play Well with Dual-Boot Systems

One of the new features that Microsoft has integrated into Windows 8 is the new Fast Startup feature that is activated by default. Windows 8 caches files on the hard drive during shutdown to speed up the start up time during the next boot. I explained the difference between shutdown and reboot before on Windows 8. When you shut down, your system makes use of the Fast Startup feature by caching data, while a reboot does not make use of the feature.


Google Chrome Hanging on Startup

For the past two days I have been noticing a issue with Google’s Chrome browser. Whenever I would start the browser, it would hang for a couple of seconds before the tabs of the previous session were loaded. This happened even if I had only one tab open that needed to be restored, so that I was pretty certain it was not caused by tab overload. I also tried switching to load the new tab page only on start up of the browser, which also did not resolve the issue. I’m experiencing hangs not only in Chrome Dev but also in Chrome Canary, which are both installed on a Windows 7 64-bit pro system.

I don’t use a startup manager myself, but this is a nice overview of what’s out there …

If you look for a program to manage startup applications in Windows you end up with dozens effortlessly. They all allow the user to manage startup items, but similarities end there. Some applications display all startup applications and files while others limit the display to the most common locations. Some startup managers may be to complex for beginners or inexperienced computer users while others can be used by everyone with ease.
