Remote Power Management – A Vital Capability for Off-Site Network Equipment Applications

When a server or a router at an off-site network equipment cabinet suddenly locks up and refuses to cooperate, in many cases a simple power reboot is all that’s needed to get an uncooperative network element back up and running again. When a vital network element at a remote network equipment site suddenly locks up and refuses to respond, often, a simple remote reboot can take care of the problem and get the network device back up and running again. In fact, remote reboot capabilities are such a key element of most out of band management solutions, that it’s becoming increasingly rare to find an off-site data center or remote network equipment cabinet that doesn’t support the ability to remotely reboot servers, routers and other network devices at the site.

Using a Network Power Switch to Keep Tabs on Remote Network Equipment

Remote network equipment sites always present a unique set of challenges for the network administrator. Due to the distant location of off-site data centers and remote equipment racks, they are obviously more difficult to access than a local equipment rack. This means that not only is it more difficult to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting functions at a remote equipment site, it’s also more difficult to keep track of potentially harmful conditions and events at the remote site.

One of the most frustrating things about managing network devices located at remote equipment sites, is the fact that you can’t easily get your hands on them when you need to. When a vital network element at a distant data center or faraway equipment cabinet suddenly crashes and refuses to respond, even a simple power reboot can suddenly become a huge pain-in-the-you-know-where to actually accomplish. Sure, it would be easy to reboot that troublesome router or uncooperative server if it was installed in a rack down the hall, but if it’s located in another state or half-way around the globe, even a routine reboot can involve service teams, truck rolls and expense reports.

The IP Power Switch: An Intelligent Alternative to a Service Call

When a vital network element suddenly locks up and crashes, often all it takes is a simple power reboot to get that device up and running again. Unfortunately, a “simple” power reboot is only simple when the network device in question is located down the hall or in the room next door; if the troublesome network element is located at an offsite data center or remote network equipment rack, miles away from the central office, then the time and trouble of getting to the remote equipment site can make even the most basic network management tasks seem like a major challenge.

If you want to minimize downtime at remote network equipment cabinets and off-site data centers, one of the most important steps you can take is to implement a remote power control solution that allows network administrators to initiate power and reboot switching functions at the remote site. Without a secure, effective remote power control solution at the off-site data center, network administrators are basically left with no alternative for dealing with unresponsive devices at the remote site, other than expensive, time consuming service calls to the remote site, merely to reboot network elements in order to get them up and running again.

Reboot Remote Network Elements without Expensive Service Calls

When a vital network element at a remote data center or off-site network equipment cabinet crashes and brings down network communication with it, there should be a better solution to the problem than sending out the service team and then sitting there with no network access while waiting for the service team to travel to the remote site in order to deal with the problem. When network communication is down, the expense of a service call, plus the delay while waiting for the service team to reach the remote equipment cabinet is totally unacceptable … especially in cases where a simple power reboot can correct the problem.
