Google Chrome Experiment Displays Only the Domain in the URL Bar

I’m generally pretty happy with Chrome … but this definitely sounds like a step in the wrong direction.

Simplification seems to be an ongoing trend, not only when it comes to web browsers but I notice it the most here. With Mozilla releasing Firefox Australis and seemingly not finished yet with the removal of features, and Google launching a minimalistic browser from the very start, it seems that the days of users deciding how they want to use a browser will come to an end eventually. I may be painting a too dark picture here but find the direction that these companies are heading towards quite frightening.

The more that a browser interface changes, the more demand for tricks to put it back the way it was before …

The introduction of the single menu button in the Firefox web browser brought along other changes with it. The menu bar of the browser is now hidden by default, and while you can get it back temporarily with a tap on the Alt-key or permanently by using the customize menu, it is likely that most Firefox users do not do such a thing.


Will Google Kill the URL Bar in Chrome?

I guess this makes sense, but it also seems like a lot of wasted effort, just to change something that wasn’t all that much of a problem in the first place.

All web browsers are getting serious overhauls with the most recent being Internet Explorer 9 with its new one box. This is a unified address and search box and it makes sense as you could always search from the URL box in browsers anyway.
