Skype 5.8 for Windows Released

My wife will be interested in this; she uses Skype to save on long distance calls to her family in Japan …

Microsoft today has released an update for the popular voice over IP, messaging and video calling software Skype. Skype 5.8 for Windows is currently only available on the Skype homepage and not via the program’s update checker. Existing Skype users who click on Help > Check for Updates are receiving notifications that they are running the latest version. It is likely that the updater is going to pick up the new version later today.


Skype Acquisition Closed, Now Part of Microsoft

Microsoft yesterday announced that the company closed the acquisition of Skype which is now an official part of Microsoft Corp. The acquisition, which cost Microsoft $8.5 billion US Dollars was originally announced on May 10, 2011.

It does not happen often that software updates ship with critical security updates. But that’s exactly the case with the Skype 5.5 release for Windows. Skype 5.5 is the first version with Facebook integration. Skype users with a Facebook account can now use some of Facebook’s functionality right in the voice over IP software. This includes posting comments and status updates, or seeing which Facebook friends are online on the social networking website.
