How to Repair and Extract Broken RAR Archives

Here are three (and a half) tricks for dealing with broken RAR archives … the fourth, “half-trick” is such a no-brainer, that I’m surprised that they decided to include it.

Broken, damaged or corrupt archives can be quite annoying. It does not really matter if an archive that you have created locally is not working anymore, or if you have downloaded Megabytes or even Gigabytes of data from the Internet only to realize that one or multiple of the files of the archive are either damaged or missing completely. That does not mean that the data cannot be repaired or extracted anymore. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to recover the archive fully, or at least partially.

You don’t run across RAR archives as often as more popular compression formats, but when you do, it’s nice to know how to open them …

Winrar introduced a new version of the popular RAR format back in April 2013 and integrated it into the final version of Winrar 5.0 when it was released in September of the same year. The RAR5 format offers better compression under certain conditions, but not all of the time. It furthermore introduces better update and open performance for archives and NTFS file security.
